Week of May 14-18:
Complete your Original Volume of Poetry ( including all 16 poems, plus Table of Contents). Poems must be typed based on the directions and examples listed within the 4 poetry handouts distributed in class. Submit your work inside a 1/2 or 1- inch binder. The binder should have a plastic cover of which your cover sheet should be placed. Due date: Wednesday, 5-23.

Monday, May 7th - Free-Writes #41-#50 due! Last journal entries of the year! - Research Outline #1 due. - NWEA testing during class
Tuesday, May 8th -Friday, May 11th - NWEA testing during class - Complete Research Outline #2 due Friday, May 11th - Continue work towards completing the first 8 poems of your original volume of poetry.

Week of April 9-13:
Work towards completion of your original short story. Follow the rubric/guidelines as distributed in class Monday, 4-9. Print a hard copy (paper copy) of your TYPED story and submit it at the beginning of the period Friday, April 20th. You will need to refer to Short Story Packets 1+2 to complete your story. You will not be able to submit your story without first receiving a grade and feedback on the two story packets, which serve as outlines. Work on your story at home and during class. See Important Handouts to download/print an extra copy of the rubric.
Week of March 26-30:
Monday 3-26 and Tuesday 3-27: Mock Job Interview Skills, Questions and Videos reviewed and discussed.
Wednesday 3-28: Mock Interview Day during English/Language Arts classes in the gym. Suggestion: Wear Casual Business/Professional Attire.
No new homework assigned this week unless you still owe Short Story Packets 1+2. They will be marked late= -20%. Submit late packets by Thursday, 3-29. You will begin typing your original short story during class on the first day back from Spring Break, Monday, April 9. Your story will be due Monday, April 16th. The guidelines/rubric handout will be posted on this website Monday, April 9.
Free-Writes 31-40 are due Thursday, 3-29 by the end of the period. Worth= 100 points!

All week at home: Work towards the completion of your Display Board Project. Use the directions guidelines and rubric handout as you work. Also, complete research towards your oral presentation of your project. Commit most of your presentation to memory. Your presentation date has already been assigned to you.
Submitting the Display Board Project: -Mrs. Dawson's Room, Room 119 -7:30 a.m.-7:45 a.m. in the designated slot for your class period. -If you travel from another school in the a.m., please drop off your board as soon as your bus drops you off at East. -Helpful Tip: Place your board inside of a large garbage bag to protect from the weather and to losing items that are not glued securely onto the board. Early Turn-In Dates for Extra Eredit: Monday, February 5, 2018 Tuesday, February 6, 2018 Only attempt to turn in your board early if it is ALL THE WAY COMPLETE and if it's FULLY decorated.

Week of January 22-26, 2018
Monday, January 22: Display Board Project Guidelines directions reviewed. Students should a copy of the guidelines and a sketch of the layout of the board in their binders. (See English Handouts on this site for an extra copy of the guidelines.) The new due date for the display board: Wednesday, February 7!
Tuesday, January 23: Story Packets #1 and #2 were issued. Story Packet #1 due: Monday, January, 26. Story Packet due : Wednesday, January 28.
Wednesday, January 24 and Thursday, January 25: Oral Presentation of Display Board Rubric issued and explained. Students have a copy of this handout in their binders. Feel free to print an extra copy. (See English Handouts.)
Friday, January 26: 1/2 Day, end of Semester 1. Students will have time within the shortened class period to work on gathering research and pictures for their display boards and/or info pertaining to their oral presentations.
Students should finish the display board within 7 nights, even though they have 3 weeks to complete it. The other 2 weeks should be spent gathering research and practicing their oral presentations, which begin on the due date of the board, Wednesday, February 7, 2018.
Week of January 15-19, 2018
- Read the last third of your January IRA novel (realistic teen fiction). IRA 3 will be issued in class this week. Due date: Tuesday, January 23rd.
- African- American Display Board Project Guidelines (handout) will be issued and explained in class, Wednesday, January 17th. Project due date: Friday, February 2. Follow every specific guideline in order to ensure success on the board. The project rubric will be issued in class, Thursday, January 18th. Next week: Oral Presentation Guidelines and Rubric of your Display Board Project handouts will be issued and explained.

January Independent Reading Assignment (IRA) #1 issued, based on the first third of your Jan. IRA book: Realistic Teen Fiction. Assigned: Tuesday, 1-3. IRA 1 due: Monday, 1-8.

Read the final third of Jan. book by Tuesday, January 16th. IRA 3 issued. Due: Friday, 1-19.
Choose the subject ( a noteworthy African-American who has made significant contributions to the history and/or culture of our country) of your February Display Board project by Monday, January 8th. If you're running behind in submitting them, report to WIN Tuesday-Thursday within this two week time period. - Teen Realistic Fiction (novel) due in class Monday, 12-18-17. Worth=10 points. Requirements: no pictures, 150 pages or more, realistic conflict and setting, must take place in the United States, main character must be between the ages of 12-17. -During class: Story Elements and Devices Unit, review key elements and devices authors/producers use in creating sound plots, watch 1 film, read several short stories January project: Create an original short story!

- Outsiders Writing Prompts #7-#12 due at the end of the period Wednesday, 12-6. Students have had 6-8 days of work option class time to complete these last few assignments based on S.E. Hinton's novel, The Outsiders. -Free-Writes #16-25 are due at the end of the period Friday, 12-8. Students have had 2 weeks to complete these entries during work option class time.

Week of October 23:
-Typed Michigan Hero Revisions due Tuesday-Friday of this week, based upon the 1-week individual deadlines you were given in your rough draft conferences last week. The revision packet must include: typed rough draft and rubric with teacher's feedback/comments and a typed revision with the changes underlined, typed in bold font or highlighted, along with the revision rubric. This project/packet is worth 211 points.
- November IRA book: Fantasy or Science Fiction book due (show Mrs. Dawson) and start bringing to class daily, Tuesday, October 24th. There will be 3 IRA assignments, one based on each third of the novel.
-Free-Writes #1-#15 due at the end of the period Thursday. You have been writing 1-page entries in your Free-Write Composition Books since the second week of school. This assignment is worth 150 points.
-We will begin reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton in class this week. You will have a short, multiple-choice quiz, along with writing prompts to address after every two chapters of the novel. There are 12 chapters.
Week of October 16-20:
Monday 10-16:
- Typed, My Michigan Hero Essay due at the beginning of the period. Your outline must have received a grade on it first. Writer's conferences begin today. You have 1 week from the time of your writer's conference to submit the typed revision for a grade. You must submit the rough draft and revision, along with the rubric together. - Mystery/Suspense IRA 3 issued, due Wednesday, 10-18.

- Mystery/Suspense IRA #2 due tomorrow, Tuesday, 10-10. You must have completed and submitted IRA#1 before submitting IRA 2.

- Complete Free-Writes 1-5 in class. Submit by mid-week.
-Students will complete the Reading NWEA test on the classroom provided laptops.
-Select an October IRA (Independent Reading Assignment) mystery or suspense novel. The novel must contain at least 150 pages. It should be age appropriate and should not have any graphics/pictures.
Show Mrs. Dawson your designated book Thursday, 9-21, before the end of the hour. Feel free to visit the Farmington Public Library, the Farmington Branch Library or the Southfield Public Library to select a book of your choice. No two people in the same period may have the same title. You will read 1/3 of the book during the last week of September. Then you will receive IRA 1 (Independent Reading Assignment 1). Follow suit with the next two chunks of pages, completing an Independent Reading Assignment for every subsequent section. Due dates for all 3 IRAs each month will be announced.
